"Its dark, brooding presence definitely evokes a feeling of power.

I first visited Bamburgh Castle about twenty-five years ago. It’s a dominating building that can be seen from miles around, but when you’re actually up there you can sense its power and grandeur, and imagine how the people who lived there in those early days must have felt.

What happened many centuries ago laid down conditions that have survived right through to the present day, and at Bamburgh Castle you can sense that enduring and continuous link between our ancestors and ourselves.

I am very pleased that Bamburgh Castle is still lived in, and not by a huge and mighty Lord, but by ordinary folk.  It’s a tribute to Lord Armstrong who renovated the castle towards the end of the 19th Century, and all the other people who have contributed to its restoration and preservation. Bamburgh seems to have escaped the worst depredations of war and is a very well looked after, well visited and much loved building.

Bamburgh Castle is located in the coastal parish of Bamburgh midway between Berwick Upon Tweed and Alnwick.

During the War of The Roses, Bamburgh became the first castle to succumb to cannon fire.

William Armstrong purchased the castle in 1894 for £60,000.  The Armstrong family still live there today.
